It isn’t like this is a new thing just this year. Shopping on Black Friday has been a part of our American holiday tradition since the sixties but only in the last few years has it become such a harrowing experience. It is as if, each year retailers compete for how outlandish their hours and sales can become and consumers, leave all morals at the door, as they try to squeeze every last penny from their dollars.
Since 2005, violence on Black Friday has increased sharply and the mayhem is becoming the norm. In 2008 an employee at a Wal-Mart was trampled to death trying to open the doors and let shoppers into the building. News reports say that even as police and employees tried to render aid to the dying man, shoppers continued to pour in around them and complain about how long they had been waiting in the cold.
Last year, a man was trampled and pinned behind the doors of a Target store after unruly customers shoved through the doors. Also in 2010, a weary Wal-Mart shopper who cut in line at the check-out threatened to shoot anyone who complained and she actually had a gun with her.
While I don’t fault anyone for trying to get a good deal and I recognize that businesses are in business to make money, I still must add Black Friday and everyone involved to the naughty list because there is now nothing nice about that day. Santa no doubt agrees that Black Friday has nothing to do with the spirit of giving but just the thrill of getting.
Therefore, Day 3 of Lori’s Naughty or Nice Countdown to Christmas awards the first naughty slot to BLACK FRIDAY and all who perpetuate the madness by your participation.
